Frank Ocean - Pyramids (Review)
Frank Ocean - Pyramids

New music from R&B Phenom, Frank Ocean. Beginning with woozy synths & reversed drums, Frank Ocean sings of a bedroom sex scene, turned into a metaphor of Ancient Egyptian imagery. Trance melodies & arpeggios follow suit, creating an interesting atmosphere of layered vocals, spaced out synthesizers & a simple, yet effective, drum pattern. The Instrumental then changes suddenly, with guitar by John Mayer to ease the transition. Pyramids then becomes a Strip Club anthem, with 808 drums & bending synthesizers replacing the previous beat, along with vocoder backing vocals adds an 80’s vibe to the song. Accompanying this switch is the addition of Distorted riffing, very reminiscent of the ending of Kanye West’s “Runaway.”
With such a risky mixture of sounds and styles, this song could easily have been a disaster, yet the Odd Future singer manages to pull it off, creating a great song that will surely be on repeat for many listeners. I give the song a 9.5/10
